Much like opals, pearls are affected by conditions in their environment. Especially since they are organic in nature. Excessive heat can cause pearls to turn brown, split, crack or burn. Dry air may cause pearls to dehydrate and cause the nacre to crack. Acids can corrode pearls as well, so care should be taken not to wear pearls in harsh conditions, or while using cleaning supplies. When worn regularly, pearls are lubricated by natural body oils which help them retain their reflective qualities, so it’s always good to wear your pearls!!
